Understanding Radon in Manitoba
Radon Rescue Manitoba was created because we were shocked by what we learned about radon in our own home, and even more shocked by how common high levels are across this province. Most people have never heard of radon until someone mentions it in passing, and suddenly you’re left wondering if your home is safe.
We’ve been in that exact moment. That’s why we’re committed to making radon information clear, calm, and easy to understand.
What Is Radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It moves upward through the ground and can enter your home through:
- Cracks in the foundation
- Sump pits
- Gaps around pipes
- Floor drains
- Crawl spaces
You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it, which is why awareness matters.
Why Radon Matters in Manitoba
Manitoba has some of the highest radon levels in Canada. Our soil composition and long heating season create ideal conditions for radon to accumulate indoors.
Many homes here test above Health Canada’s guideline of 200 Bq/m³, and many exceed 600, 1,000, or even higher.
The only way to know your level is to test.
Health Risks
Long‑term exposure to high radon levels increases the risk of lung cancer. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non‑smokers.
We don’t share this to scare you, we share it because we wish someone had told us sooner.
What You Can Do
Understanding radon is the first step. From here, you can:
